5 bridges to see in Adjara #2

Apart from its fabulous nature, beautiful coastline and tourist-attractive infrastructure, Adjara is distinguished by old and new architectural buildings, cultural heritage sites, museums and centuries-old history. There are many places and buildings in Adjara, which provide an opportunity for history and lovers of culture to travel in the past. Here are the bridges of outstanding importance that have decorated this region for more than a century:

1. Makhuntseti Bridge - XII century bridge is located in Adjaristskali, Keda municipality, 54 meters from the central Batumi-Khulo road. Its beauty leaves an indelible impression on visitors. Volcanic rock was used to build the bridge and rests on the natural piers of the rock. In 2006, according to the decree of the President of Georgia, it was awarded the category of a real cultural monument of national importance. Here you can enjoy a sample of centuries-old history, visit a beautiful waterfall and arrange a picnic.

2. Tskhemvana Arch Bridge - dates back to the XII century and the history of its creation is associated with a very interesting legend. It is located near the Kintrishi gorge, in the village of Didvake, on the river Kintrishi. Tskhemvana Bridge has an artificial pier only on the right side, while on the left, a natural rock acts as a pier. According to the legend, the bridge was built by Tamar's order, she ordered: "A bridge should be built in this place so that neither the river, nor time can harm it." Indeed the bridge has endured for centuries and today it is an attractive place for lovers of history and culture.

3. Khetsubani Bridge - built by Italian architect Augusto Vertzi in 1924. The bridge is distinguished by the fact that it consists of two arches and is built of reinforced concrete and basalt stone. Due to its distinctive and different visuals it is impossible to mix it with other bridges. It is used today for crossing the river and fishing.

4. Makho’s Bridge - The medieval arched bridge is located on the river Makhotskali, at the end of the village Makho. The bridge is single-arched and has a circular shape, built of well-smoothed blocks. On November 7, 2006, by the decree of the President of Georgia, it was awarded the category of a real cultural monument of national importance.

5. Khabelashvili wooden arch bridge - XVIII century bridge is located in the village of Khabelashvili, Shuakhevi municipality. The bridge is 26 meters long and its history spans more than three centuries. The arch bridge is unique and rare in all of western Georgia. Has its authenticity, is distinguished by a different method of construction and roofing. Unique wood species such as chestnut, oak and birch are used in the construction of the bridge. In 2013, the Khabelashvili Bridge was granted the status of a real cultural heritage monument by the order of the Minister of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia.
