Stone Arched Bridges – Centennial History

The most beautiful part of Georgia Adjara, in addition to the fabulous nature, beautiful coastline and tourist-attractive infrastructure, is distinguished by old and new architectural buildings, cultural heritage sites, museums and centuries-old history. There are many places and buildings in Adjara, which are an opportunity for history and culture lovers to travel to the past. Of particular importance are the arched bridges, which date back more than a century.
  • Dandalo Bridge - a unique monument of Georgian bridge-construction art dates back to IX-X centuries. It is located in Keda municipality, near the village of Dandalo, on the river Adjaristskali. The bridge is distinguished by a thin arch and refined proportions resembling the Latin letter S. It is more difficult from the point of view of construction equipment to build a bridge of this shape. It is built of local limestone and lime mortar. Both piers are mounted on a rock, which protects its bottom from washing out. The bridge was awarded the category of a real cultural monument of national importance in 2006 in accordance with the decree of the President of Georgia.
  • Tskhemlara Arched Bridge - Medieval Bridge, located on the river Machakhela, Khelvachauri municipality, in the village of Tskhemlara. The bridge is built on a narrow ground with a sloping arch that has a semicircular outline. It is distinguished by laying of stones, a large span and a small height, which was intended for pedestrians. The bridge was awarded the category of a real cultural monument of national importance in 2006 by a decree of the President of Georgia. The narrow bridge, hidden in the beautiful nature, is always covered with green plants due to the moisture, which gives it an effect of antiquity and mysticism.
  • Mirveti Bridge - XI-XIII century bridge is located in the village of Mirveti, Khelvachauri Municipality, near the suburb of Dzigure, at the confluence of the Mirveti water with the Chorokhi. The carriageway is covered with medium-sized flat stones. The piers are built on the rock on both sides. If you want to relax, go on a picnic or a bike tour with a look at the past history, this is an ideal place for you.
  • Furtio Bridge - Medieval Bridge, located on the river Adjaristskali, between the villages of Zamleti and Furtio, in a place called Oshoshman. The construction of the Furtio Bridge indicates the exceptional professionalism of the builders, as rocky soil is used as a support for the head and end of the bridge and it is built of flat stones. The bridge has retained its original shape. In 2006, according to the decree of the President of Georgia, it was awarded the category of a real cultural monument of national importance.
  • Varjanauli Bridge - XI-XII century bridge is located in the village of Varjanauli, Kobuleti Municipality, 20 kilometers from the Kobuleti district center. The area is completely covered by the distinctive nature of the Kintrishi Protected Area. It is distinguished by its height and length and has a pronounced semicircular outline. It belongs to the period of flourishing of architectural art and is considered to be a monument of Rustaveli era.
